Having masterminded Town’s return to the top flight after a 22-year absence, McKenna had been linked with a host of top clubs.

Chelsea were understood to have been heavily interested in brining him to Stamford Bridge following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino, while he is still held in high regard by senior figures at United where he began his coaching career.

Brighton, too, who are on the lookout for a new manager following Roberto De Zerbi’s exit, were linked but McKenna but the 38-year-old is going nowhere.

Assistant Manager Martyn Pert, First-Team Coaches Charlie Turnbull and Lee Grant and Head of Goalkeeping Rene Gilmartin have also extended their contracts.

Speaking after signing his new deal, McKenna said: ‘I am extremely proud to have signed a new contract with the Club.
