Reading: A Treasure of Life

‘Reading is a discount ticket to everywhere.’

Being brought up in a family of bookworms, books have always been the greatest treasure of my life.

I really wanted my friends to also discover this treasure of life, so, I asked them to read something every night and one of them wisely replied, that the only reading he does is on an app called Instagram.

I felt saddened by the fact that social media was taking over the Art of Reading. But I wanted to change this trend and bring back reading into the mainstream. So, I collected my friends top three reasons to run away from reading.

Maybe some of you here too share these uncertainties which I would like to remove today.

  1. Reading is Boring

People consider it boring to read non-illustrated books. Social Media has made us used to evident visuals instead of imaginative ones. We forget to realize that while reading only words our brain gets the chance to build the entire scene with a personalized touch.

It is scientifically proven that reading not only improves our creativity but also enhances our concentration and memory.

  • Reading makes one Antisocial

The next issue with reading was that it is considered a loner’s activity. Readers are considered antisocial but it is again a myth because reading is an exercise in empathy. An exercise of walking in someone else’s shoes for a while.

Books teach you how to read and understand people on an emotional level. In real life people can hide their true feelings behind a mask but in books the protagonist always displays true emotions. So, a good reader can understand people and connect with them on a greater level.

  • Another Part of Academics

Students prefer not to read because they think it is just another part of academics. And after a long day of studying who can relax while reading. They forget that both reading a novel and reading an academic book are altogether different things.

In academic books you are forced to analyze and understand everything. The pressure of exams is always there.

But while reading books you gain an insight on how others have dealt with various struggles and challenges. With their win you gain happiness and with their failure you learn acceptance.

I know the start would be difficult but when you find the right book you will never let it go unread.

So, start small, maybe just with some popular fiction. Because as it is rightly stated, “In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get to you.”
